Children’s eye tests are free under the NHS. All under-16s and those aged 16-18 who are in full time education are also entitled to a voucher which can be used towards the cost of their spectacles, should they need them.
All children should have a full eye examination prior to joining primary school and regularly thereafter, normally once a year. A child’s vision is virtually fully developed by the age of about eight and therefore it is important to correct any visual defects before then in order to avoid lazy eyes and squints developing. The earlier the monitoring begins, the better the results. Often children under-perform at school due to uncorrected vision or problems relating to their sight.

Contact lenses for children can often be an option for recreational use and sports. Our experienced optometrists will be happy to discuss the options with you. We can also provide prescription sports and/or swimming goggles for your child.
